According to reports from entertainment outlet, Variety, Academy Award-winning actor Daniel Day-Lewis has retired from acting. The surprising move will be made official after the release of the 60-year-old’s forthcoming project with celebrated director Paul Thomas Anderson.

That aforementioned movie entitled, Phantom Thread, will apparently explore the world of high fashion, and is set to release this Christmas where it will compete with some heavy hitters including, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Ferdinand, and the anticipated Jumanji reboot. Phantom Thread will reunite Anderson and Day-Lewis, who collaborated on the 2007 critical darling, There Will Be Blood, which took home a ton of nods for both director and actor.

Day-Lewis has yet to give reason for the move, but the respected actor is notoriously careful when choosing projects throughout his illustrious career. This modus operandi has birthed considerable breaks between roles, with the most recent lull clocking in at five years since his gracing the screen.

Variety managed to obtain a statement from spokeswoman, Leslee Dart, who confirmed the news via email. “Daniel Day-Lewis will no longer be working as an actor. He is immensely grateful to all of his collaborators and audiences over the many years. This is a private decision and neither he nor his representatives will make any further comment on this subject.”

Perhaps known best for his commitment to the craft, Daniel Day-Lewis has also been immortalized thanks to his success during award season. He is the only man to win three Academy Awards for best actor, and as a nice added bonus, he’s received nominations for lead roles in Gangs of New York and In the Name of the Father.

Due to his elusiveness, it’s unlikely that we’ll hear much regarding the recent career change. To help fans settled down amidst the news, here’s one of Day-Lewis’ most impressive scenes of acting.
