The 34th Annual Razzie Award Nominations Are Here

It is officially awards season, and all the usual suspects are nominated for prestigious Golden Globes, Oscars, and Screen Actors Guild Awards. But sometimes a bad movie is just as entertaining as a great movie. And sometimes Oscar winning actors (Halle Berry, Sandra Bullock) make terrible movies. The Razzies aim to not let these films slip through the cracks and into obscurity. So, here are the nominees for the 34th Annual Razzie Awards, which will be given out on March 1st, the day before the Academy Awards.

Worst Picture

Nominees: After Earth, Grown Ups 2, The Lone Ranger, A Madea Christmas, Movie 43

It’s a battle between After Earth and The Lone Ranger for the levels of sheer unsubstantiated hype. They are proof that truckloads of money + special effects + star power do not equal a good movie.

Worst Actor

Nominees: Johnny Depp (The Lone Ranger), Ashton Kutcher (Jobs), Adam Sandler (Grown Ups 2), Jaden Smith (After Earth), Sylvester Stallone (Escape Plan, Grudge Match, Bullet to the Head)

If Adam Sandler wins, it will be his third Worst Actor Razzie. If that isn’t enough to make him stop acting, I don’t know what is. Still Sylvestor Stallone may have him beat this year, being nominated for terrible acting in three different movies in one year. Sly is no stranger to the Razzie either, despite being a past Academy Award nominee.

Worst Actress

Nominees: Halle Berry (The Call, Movie 43), Selena Gomez (Getaway), Lindsay Lohan (The Canyons), Tyler Perry (A Madea Christmas), Naomi Watts (Movie 43)

Halle Berry is a previous Worst Actress award recipient (which she graciously accepted in person), and also an Academy Award winner. It might go to Tyler Perry this year though, despite the fact that he is a man. Maybe he will accept the award in person dressed as the character everyone wishes he would stop making movies about, Madea.

Worst Supporting Actress

Nominees: Lady Gaga (Machete Kills), Salma Hayek (Grown Ups 2), Katherine Heigl (The Big Wedding), Kim Kardashian (Tyler Perry’s Temptation), Lindsay Lohan (In-App-propriate Comedy, Scary Movie 5)

As awful as Katherine Heigl is, reality stars are always the definition of terrible actor. Kim Kardashian has this one in the bag

Worst Supporting Actor

Nominees: Chris Brown (Battle of the Year), Larry the Cable Guy (A Madea Christmas), Taylor Lautner (Grown Ups 2), Will Smith (After Earth), Nick Swardson (Haunted House, Grown Ups 2)

Chris Brown acts?

Worst Director

Nominees: 13 people who directed Movie 43, Dennis Dugan (Grown Ups 2), Tyler Perry (A Madea Christmas), M. Night Shyamalan (After Earth), Gore Verbinski (The Lone Ranger)

M. Night may take this one just for the fact that his name is synonymous with bad movies. He has already been honoured with the worst director Razzie twice (for Lady in the Water and The Last Airbender). Maybe a third win will inspire him to get his shit together and bring us more Signs and The Sixth Sense.

Worst Screen Combo

Nominees: Entire cast of Grown Ups 2, Entire Cast of Movie 43, Lindsay Lohan and Charlie Sheen (Scary Movie 5), Tyler Perry and either Larry the Cable Guy or That Worn-Out Wig & Dress (A Madea Christmas), Jaden Smith and Will Smith on planet nepotism (After Earth)

Movie 43 (which by the way I had never even heard of before watching a trailer 5 minutes ago) is so jammed packed with famous people that chemistry between characters is impossible. Everyone wants to be the star, which results in a bunch of cameos no one cares about. I still don’t know what this movie is about.

Worst Screenplay

Nominees: After Earth, Grown Ups 2, Lone Ranger, A Madea Christmas, Movie 43

This one is hard to judge, considering I haven’t seen any of them. From the looks of it, Movie 43 was written by pre-teens that wanted to see all their favourite actors together in one movie, so that has to be the winner.

Worst Remake/Rip-off/Sequel

Nominees: Grown Ups 2, Hangover III, The Lone Ranger, Scary Movie 5, Smurfs 2

They just need to stop the Scary Movie franchise. It is a magnet for D-List actors trying to make a comeback. If it couldn’t make Lindsay Lohan a star again, it is useless.
