Sony Announces PlayStation 4 Pro

Above: PlayStation 4 Pro will release this November

Lost amongst Apple’s massive news last night, was the announcement of a new edition of Sony’s PlayStation. The video game console is receiving an updated version of its latest hardware, which will release on November 10th. Dubbed the PlayStation 4 Pro, the update will feature advanced mechanics, allowing it to display beautiful 4K visuals and HDR colouring. Sony Interactive CEO, Andrew House, stated that this new release will please the hardcore gaming community.

Also announced were the slimmer versions of the PlayStation 4. These pieces will sell for $379 and are being marketed as the new standard model. The Pro edition will be a little more pricey, and will sell for $499. Both versions will play any regular PlayStation 4 game, but in order to get the full 4K experience, gamers will need to invest in the Pro and a 4K television set.

Sony’s move mirrors that of rival Xbox, as the Microsoft-owned company unleashed their Xbox One S at this year’s E3. Both consoles support higher resolution TVs, and are similarly sleeker than their predecessor. With the release of the PlayStation 4 Pro, Sony will no doubt look to continue their lead in the console wars. To date, the company has sold 40,000,000 units, surpassing both Xbox and Nintendo by a wide margin.

The release of the Pro will be supported by the hotly anticipated game, Mass Effect: Andromeda, which will take use of the 4K visuals, and will release next spring. In the meantime, you can cop the Pro and play your entire PlayStation 4 library as is. If you’re lucky enough to own a 4K TV and want to get a taste of the tech, you can watch the Mass Effect demonstration of the PS4 Pro, below.
