The Lowdown On Laser Hair Removal

Your brother’s got it, your father had it (he just didn’t know) and you do, too. And now you’re contemplating getting rid of all of it. We’re talking about your unwanted hair. And while shaving and waxing has worked, you’re debating more permanent solutions. Here’s what you need to know about laser hair removal.

What is laser hair removal and how does it work?
Exactly as it sounds, laser hair removal uses lasers to remove unwanted hair from your armpits, groin area, legs, arms, back, face and more. “It uses the power of light to target the pigment within the hair follicle to destroy it and prevent further growth,” explains Dr. Mansour Bendago MD FRCSC, a plastic and reconstructive surgeon at the Toronto Cosmetic Clinic.

How does it work?
While there are several types of lasers you can use, the Fontona SP Dynamis and the Palomar StarLux 500 are quality options for this treatment. “Both lasers are safe to use on all skin types,” says Dr. Bendago. “The Fotona uses a touchless method and treatment times are rather quick, while the Palomar laser hair removal involves a carbonization step of the hair follicle, so patients can see the hair being shed off sooner than some of the other lasers on the market.”

Where should you laser and what are the benefits?
Most men opt to laser their back and chest hair, but it all boils down to personal preference. The only areas that are off limits for safety reasons are inside your ears, inside your nose and on your eyebrows. As for the benefits, laser hair removal saves time, eliminates the need to shave or wax and can help prevent ingrown hairs. Plus, “it will save you time and money,” says Dr. Bendago, on booking and attending aesthetic appointments and on shaving products.

How many sessions do you need?
The amount of sessions required is dependent on how stubborn your hair is and which body area you’re removing it from. On average, you’ll need “six to10 sessions,” says Dr. Bendago. Make sure to book each appointment four to six weeks apart as that’s how long the new hair-growth cycle takes.

Does it hurt?
It depends on your pain threshold; some areas of the body are more sensitive than others. Note: The Fotona SP Dynamis laser uses a touchless, cooling method to make the treatment more comfortable.

What’s the cost?
Prices range from $125 per session for the neck area to $850 per session for the entire body.
