Woman Crush Wednesday: Scarlett Johansson

Name: Scarlett Johansson

Birthdate: November 22, 1984

Birthplace: New York, New York

Claim to fame: While she had already been getting high acclaim for her many roles throughout her childhood, her most notable early performances were in 2003 when she was in Sofia Coppola’s, Lost in Translation, starring opposite Bill Murray and Girl with a Pearl Earring. Both roles got her nominated for Golden Globes and put her at the top of the young Hollywood actors list.

What we can see her in next: Now in theatres, we can see her in Captain America: The Winter Soldier starring in her role as the black widow. She also has a role in the comedy, Chef, as Molly, which is written and directed by Jon Favreau and also starring Robert Downey Jr. She will also be starring in a sci-fi action film titled Lucy, as the main protagonist, Lucy. Then in 2015, she will reprise her role as the black widow again, in the next installment of The Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Interesting fact: She was short-listed for the 1998 Disney movie, The Parent Trap, but lost out on the part to Lindsay Lohan. (Imagine how different her career trajectory might have been, had she booked the role?)

Best quote: “I was driving through Los Angeles and I look up and see the biggest photo of me I have ever seen in my life on a massive ad space. I screamed and slammed on the breaks. I couldn’t believe it. It’s very strange to see my cleavage the size of a brontosaurus. My breasts were huge. I had long hair, and my goodness, I couldn’t get past the cleavage.” – on her cleavage

Why we love her: Most guys take one look at Scarlett Johansson and become instantly infatuated. How could you not? She has the head-turning curves and the husky voice that could seduce even the most asexual of humans. She’s been considered by many to be the modern-day version of Marilyn Munroe – her beauty is classic and old-fashioned, and she’s busting by the seams with sex appeal. If she’s not the perfect mold for a modern day sex symbol, then I don’t know what is. She’s also the only woman to ever be named “Sexiest Woman Alive” twice by Esquire magazine, in both 2006 and 2013.

She’s been a household name in Hollywood for over a decade now, plastered across magazines and movie screens. She started her career at a very young age, while living in New York; she landed her first role at the age of seven in the off-Broadway production of Sophistry where she worked alongside Ethan Hawke. Then came many other roles throughout her childhood, as well as her close call in landing the Lindsay Lohan role on Parent Trap in 1998. She then really came to the attention of fans and industry peers when she broke out in a big way in 2003, when she starred in Sofia Coppola’s film, Lost in Translation, opposite Bill Murray, as well as starring in Girl with the Pearl Earring. She also graduated from The Children’s Professional School in 2002, which includes fellow graduates such as Carrie Fischer and Sarah Michelle Gellar.

Scarlett Johansson is a whole lot of woman. Her sex appeal and alluring beauty make her the classic leading lady, but she also continually keeps proving to the haters and those that think she can’t act, that she does in fact have the acting chops to do justice to the roles she gets. There’s a reason why she’s managed to sustain a successful career over the past decade in Hollywood. It’s more than just her physical appearance – it’s her charm, her wit, and the way she draws us into her when she’s on the screen. Oh, and don’t forget the fact that she can sing too. The simple truth is: nobody can get enough of Scarlett Johansson. That seems a trend that is likely to continue, whether you like it or not.
