This week, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, will hit theatres worldwide. The film will be the first in a planned anthology series, and is poised to become the year’s biggest box office smash. Fans of the series have been eagerly anticipating the film since its fateful announcement last March, and if the early reviews are any indication, the new adventure won’t disappoint. What has been slightly disappointing, however, is the quality of big-budget productions this past year. The critical failure of Suicide Squad, Batman v Superman, and Independence Day: Resurgence left a sour taste in our mouths, and put a damper on the excitement of many releases.
Despite its failures, we did get some decent flicks in 2016, with Rogue One standing out as the best and truest blockbuster. While there was salvageable content, reflecting on last year’s massive titles, makes 2016 seem mediocre at best. There may be a few weeks left in December, but we now have our sights set on 2017.
