Strap yourselves in, because one of television’s most gripping shows is finally back. This weekend, HBO released a brand new trailer for the third season of True Detective, and it’s looking like the crime saga is primed for a major comeback. Earlier this year, it was announced that Mahershala Ali was cast as the series’ lead character along with secondary support from Stephen Dorff, Ray Fisher, and Canada’s own Sarah Gadon.

Much like its previous entries, True Detective will again follow a dark crime spree plaguing an American town. Perhaps in response to the second season’s lacklustre reception, the new batch of episodes will also borrow heavily from the debut run in terms of structure. Judging from a few short clips, it looks like the show will once again play with time jumps, as Mahershala Ali’s character is seen as both young and old in the trailer.

According to HBO press, the forthcoming season will tell the tale of a missing children’s case in the Ozarks sometime during the 1980s. Of course, we should expect this seemingly straightforward case to evolve into something even more complex and sinister. You can check out the teaser below via YouTube, and be sure to set your PVRs, because True Detective returns to small screens on January 13, 2019.
