PlayStation 4 sales reached the 1 million mark just 24 hours after the new gaming console was launched in the U.S. and Canada. At a price point of $399 on both sides of the border, the highly-anticipated PlayStation 4 went on sale Thursday at midnight.

“PS4 was designed with an unwavering commitment to gamers, and we are thrilled that consumer reaction has been so phenomenal,” Andrew House, Sony Computer Entertainment president and group CEO, said in a statement on Sunday morning. “Sales remain very strong in North America, and we expect continued enthusiasm as we launch the PlayStation 4 in Europe and Latin America on November 29. We are extremely grateful for the passion of PlayStation fans and thank them for their continued support.”

Sony hopes to continue the trend with strong sales of the PlayStation 4 in Europe and Latin America where it will be launched on November 29th (the console doesn’t hit Japan until February 22, 2014). But competition is coming from Microsoft’s launch of the Xbox One on November 22nd.
