Earlier this year, Apple teased their long-awaited Nintendo crossover, Super Mario Run, in a massive keynote address. The news regarding the mobile app generated some serious noise online, but it was easily overshadowed by the event’s other major announcements – mainly the unveiling of the iPhone 7. While it was a brief moment in the presentation, Super Mario Run excited fans with a terrific gameplay demo, which was made extra special by an appearance from franchise mastermind, Shigeru Miyamoto.

Super Mario Run‘s side-scrolling model and simple dynamics, make it a terrific offering for casual gamers. Nintendo pushed this notion themselves, stating that you only need one hand to operate the app – as mentioned in the presentation, this makes it ideal for commuting. Meanwhile, for diehard fans of the series, its features are completely familiar. Stars, coins, and of course, jumping, dominate the majority of the playthrough. Users have the option of three separate game modes upon launch, including a traditional “World Tour”, a multiplayer mode called “Toad Rally”, and a customizable area called, “Kingdom Builder”.

Both Apple and Nintendo have heavily pushed the release of Super Mario Run. It’s the belief that both parties sense that the game has potential to join the ranks of other massive iOS hits like, Angry Birds, Candy Crush, and Clash of Clans. One thing the new game has going for itself, is the established and massive popularity of the Mario franchise. Judging by the reaction online, Super Mario Run will likely sit atop the app store for the foreseeable future.
