On August 25th, 2001, R&B superstar Aaliyah, boarded a Cessna 402 plane at a Bahamian airport. The singer had just wrapped production on her latest video, “Rock The Boat”, off of her newly released and self-titled album. In what would be her final tragic moment, the plane unexpectedly plummeted from the air, crashing and killing its occupants. The intoxicated pilot lost control of his vehicle, and subsequently, became responsible for the death of Aaliyah and seven others. The event sent shockwaves throughout the music community. At only 22 years of age, Aaliyah had cemented herself as one of the industry’s brightest young acts. Her voice defined the R&B genre during the 1990s, and would prove to be an incredible influence for years to come.

5. At Your Best (You Are Love)

The Isley Brothers penned this classic way back in 1975. Aaliyah would put her own modern spin on the track, almost twenty years later. Her cover broke the Billboard Top 10 in 1994, and was quickly certified gold within a few short months. Last year, Frank Ocean recorded his own cover of the song, and has since released it through his visual album, Endless.
