Water has been an important part of the Prada label’s equation since it’s inception in 1913 when Mario Prada designed and sold trunks and suitcases made from walrus skin in his two shops in Milan. Albeit waterproof, the handcrafted items proved too cumbersome for in-flight travel and were quickly replaced with equally resistant, quality leather. Thankfully, little else has changed. With granddaughter Miuccia firmly at the helm since 1978, the Italian couture house retains its elegant simplicity and it’s liquid counterpart. It’s latest addition: Prada Luna Rossa Sport EDT for men.

Part four in a luxurious fragrance series (with one bottle being a 2013 limited edition), this eau de toilette was originally created as Prada Luna Rossa, an ode to a sailing boat and its team the Red Moon or as said in Italiano: the Luna Rossa, participating annually in the America’s Cup. And while you’d think the scent would be a watery elixir comprised of salty and aquatic notes it’s anything but.

Crafted by world-renowned perfumer Daniela (Roche) Andrier, this fourth rendition contains its predecessors’ signature, masculine aromatic note lavender, while mix-mastering it with the tart zing of juniper berries and ginger before easing it into a warm, smoky and sexy vibe that’s replete with vanilla, tonka bean and tobacco. And while it does hint at the ocean’s refreshing spray, the scent’s overall effect is less boat shoes and sails at half mast and more of an after hours celebration of a regatta win—powerful and intense, vibrant and energetic. Bottled in the same flacon as previous editions, this red and clear glass counterpart is embellished with smooth metal and embodied by model Tim Schuhmacher, captured on film by photographer Craig McDean.

Prada Luna Ross Sport fragrance comes in 50 ml for $72 and 100 ml for $92. It’s available at Holt Renfrew, Sephora, Murale, Shoppers Drug Mart and Hudson’s Bay stores across Canada.
