The latest fashion week trend making its way from the runway to the city streets is wearing sweat clothes as daywear. Sweats are no longer restricted to the gym or home, and when styled correctly can create a relaxed, stylish look.

On the heels of celebrating its 40th anniversary, Canadian lifestyle brand Roots is launching a premium fleece sweats line called Roots XL Collection. Now, before you start to think that ‘XL’ pertains to clothing size… hold that thought. XL is the Roman numeral for 40, perfectly matching the company’s anniversary milestone.

Made in Canada and designed by the company’s award-winning athletics and special projects leader Adrian Aitcheson, the Roots XL Collection consists of nine mix-and-match pieces; t-shirts, sweaters and bottoms all in heather grey, and made from a high quality, heavyweight cotton-rayon blend. Two standout pieces from the collection, a hoodie and shorts, in a grey and black graphic print inspired by a topographical map of Algonquin Park in central Ontario.

If Aitcheson’s name sounds familiar then you’ll remember his popular independent street wear label Too Black Guys from the 1990s. He was also involved in designing the Olympic team uniforms for Canada, Great Britain and the United States in early 2000s. Currently overseeing Roots’ Athletics and Special Collections division, Aitcheson’s vision for Roots XL was to create clothing “that really speaks to Canadians and represents Canada even to people who aren’t from here.”

With its minimalist design, Roots XL Collection is perfect for the gym or hitting the bar with your boys for weekend drinks.
