Woman Crush Wednesday: Eugenie Bouchard

Above: Eugenie Bouchard at the 2013 Rogers Cup in Toronto

Name: Eugenie Bouchard

Birthdate: February 25, 1994

Birthplace: Westmount, Quebec, Canada

Claim to fame: She is currently the 8th ranked women’s tennis player in the world.

Career highlight: Bouchard says that her most sizeable accomplishment was winning the 2012 Wimbledon Junior’s Championship. This past July, she also became the first Canadian tennis player to make it to the finals of a grand slam, losing to Kvitova in the finals at Wimbledon.

Interesting fact: It has been said that her mother has a bit of a royal-family obsession, considering her and her fraternal twin sister Beatrice are named after Prince Andrew’s daughters — Princess Beatrice of York and Princess Eugenie of York.

Best quote: “Best friend on tour, I don’t have one. I don’t think the tennis tour is the place to have friends. For me, it’s all competition. And I think it’s important to just remember that we’re going to play against each other. It’s not like we’re teammates. To me, it’s kind of more competitive.” — Bouchard on her competitive nature.

Why we love her: “Genie! Genie! Genie” This is a very popular chant going on in Canada these days. Actually, this is a very popular chant going on in a lot of places all over the world these days. These cheers you’re hearing are probably from the “Genie Army”, which is an army of young men who adore and support Bouchard with the type of fan-craze that 13 year olds support Robert Pattinson. That’s because our little star tennis player and athlete Eugenie Bouchard, has taken over the tennis world, and the actual world, the past couple of years as she’s catapulted up the tennis rankings like the beautiful blonde racquet warrior she is. Eugenie Bouchard is our crush this week because her ferocious talent makes us feel pretty darn proud to be Canadian, and oh yeah…she’s pretty cute too.

Even though Bouchard is only 20 years old, she has come on strong the past couple of years on the WTA. This past year she was the only women’s player on the tour to advance to the semi-finals or better in all 3 grand slams (Australian Open, French Open, and Wimbledon). She also became the first Canadian ever to make it to the finals of a grand slam, when she lost to Kvitova in July’s Wimbledon tournament.

Now everyone is taking notice, capped off by the fact she has Hollywood good looks. She recently signed major sponsorship deals with heavy hitters such as Nike and Coke Canada. There was also a recent Vogue shoot as well.

There is absolutely no limit to what this young star can accomplish. But no matter what she does or how far she goes, she can count on the devoted and unified chants from an army of men, and an entire country.
