Hunger

Michael Fassbender was relatively unknown before his role as Bobby Sands, an Irish republican who went on a hunger strike in prison, which ultimately led to his death. Fassbender adopted a 600 calorie a day diet that consisted mostly of berries, nuts and sardines.

Fassbender did regularly visit the doctor to monitor his health but that didn’t stop him from losing 42 pounds. “I went for my final check-up after filming and my doctor said, ‘Last time you came in here you looked pretty bad. My assistant was outside and she saw you and said, ‘My God, that guy’s really ill, isn’t he?’ She thought you had cancer’. People don’t actually say anything directly to you.” Fassbender says about the reaction he got from people about his emaciated appearance.

But the dedication paid off. After completing Hunger, Fassbender went on to star films like in X-Men: First Class, Inglorious Basterds, and A Dangerous Method.
