No primetime show has consistently delivered those jaw-dropping scenes like Grey’s Anatomy. From the very first season, creator Shonda Rhimes ensured the critically acclaimed medical drama pushed boundaries and delivered countless watercooler moments.

As Grey’s Anatomy closes out its 11th season, we take a look back at some of the most memorable moments, from heartbreaking to terrifying.

Hi, I’m Addison Shepherd
Season 1, Episode 9: “Who’s Zoomin’ Who?”

"Hi, I'm Addison Sheperd"

Grey’s Anatomy — originally a mid-season replacement for Boston Legal — began airing to positive reviews in March 2005, and delivered its first real jaw-dropping moment with the season one finale. Derek spots a red-haired woman in the lobby of Seattle Grace Hospital and quickly apologized to Meredith before the woman walked over and introduced herself: “Hi, I’m Addison Shepherd. And you must be the woman who’s been screwing my husband?” Those unforgettable final moments set the tone for a solid second season, and the entire series.

The candle house
Season 4, Episode16: “Freedom: Part 1”

The candle house

Like most great TV couples, Meredith and Derek faced more than their share of dramatic obstacles. But, the night of their clinical trial’s first success in season four, Meredith finally decided that she was all in. She outlined the plans for their dream house in candles and anxiously waited for Derek to arrive. Just as Meredith was thinking she’s done something really stupid, Derek appeared and she told him she believes they could be “extraordinary together instead of ordinary apart.”

Meredith drowns
Season 3, Episode 16: “Drowning on Dry Land”

Meredith drowns

When a huge ferry boat crashed and caused chaos in season three, the Seattle Grace doctors worked feverously on the scene to help trauma victims. Meredith was knocked into the water while trying to help a little girl… and then simply gave up. She doesn’t swim and disappeared into the icy water. Cue Derek heroically pulling Meredith, who’s blue, and not breathing, out of the water. Spoiler. Not really. She pulled through.

Burke leaves Cristina at the altar
Season 3, Episode 25: “Didn’t We Almost Have It All?”

Burke leaves Cristina at the altar

By the end of Grey’s third season, Isaiah Washington’s fate was sealed. Washington had a heated on-set confrontation with fellow cast member Patrick Dempsey and used a derogatory gay slur to refer to T.R. Knight. The much-publicized behind-the-scenes drama and subsequent incident at the 2007 Golden Globes when Washington dropped an F-bomb backstage denying everything ensured that Burke and Cristina’s highly anticipated nuptials would never happen. Burke tells Cristina he’s leaving before she walks down the aisle and the season closed with that incredible scene of Cristina breaking down in Meredith’s arms declaring “I’m free.”

Code Black
Season 2, Episode 17: “As We Know It”

Code Black

For its coveted post-Super Bowl airing in 2006, Grey’s had a patient rushed to the hospital with a homemade bazooka shell lodged inside him. The surgical wing is shut down and Meredith ends up holding the bazooka shell steady to try and keep it from exploding after a paramedic (guest star Christina Ricci) freaked out and let go. When a seriously stern bomb squad leader (guest star Kyle Chandler) finally took the shell from Meredith’s hands the audience thought everything was going to be alright… then the bomb exploded. Worthy of note? “As We Know It” was the highest rated and most watched episode of the entire series.
