A new documentary about Amy Winehouse has the late singer’s family upset and disassociating themselves from the film. According to a statement the family made to People, the film is “both misleading and contains some basic untruths.”

Film director Asif Kapadia is set to release his new project Amy at the Cannes Film Festival in May, and then hitting theatres this summer. The family says they originally supported the film but now seek to “disassociate themselves” after seeing it.

Amy’s father, Mitch Winehouse said, “I felt sick when I watched it for the first time. Amy would have been furious. This is not what she would have wanted.”

According to the Winehouse’s the film negatively portrays Amy’s father Mitch. It makes him seem more interested in making money than his daughter’s wellbeing. The family also says the film ignores the role Amy’s ex-husband, Blake Fielder-Civil, played in her life.

“The narrative is formed by the testimony of a narrow sample of Amy’s associates, many of whom had nothing to do with her in the last years of her life,” the statement in People reads.  The family says that the counter views expressed in interviews with the filmmakers did not make it into the film.

A spokesperson from the film told People, “We came on board with the full backing of the Winehouse family and we approached the project with total objectivity. We conducted in the region of 100 interviews with people that knew Amy. The story that the film tells is a reflection of our findings from these interviews.”

The Grammy-winning singer died of alcohol poisoning at age 27, in July 2011.
