Le Labo has made a name for itself by treating its fragrances, like SHIU 25 EDP, like a personal expression.
Founded in New York City’s Nolita neighbourhood in 2006 by Fabrice Penot and Eddie Roschi, Le Labo set out to challenge the conventions of traditional perfumery with its hands-on, artisanal approach and a philosophy that has centred on craftsmanship, individuality and the idea that fine fragrance should speak to its spritzer rather than be prescribed by gender. They’ve been very successful and the brand continues to build its fragrances around ingredients, moods and memories, leaving the wearer to decide what feels like them.

This newest addition to the brand’s City Exclusive Collection, is dedicated to Beijing. Inspired by contemplative spaces, traditional artisanship and the quieter side of the city, it’s an olfactory invitation to slow down and reconnect with the senses. Airy and meditative shiu notes, derived from the Ho tree, open the scent before ethereal, yet earthy iris notes waft in. The elegant, powdered floral trail leans into olibanum notes (often referred to as frankincense) adding a resinous, incense-like warmth that feels smoky, luminous and contemplative. Beneath it all, warm, grounding wood notes create depth, giving the composition a smooth foundation. The overall effect is quiet, sensual and compelling.
Captured in the City Exclusive bottle, the clear juice is unmistakably Le Labo: minimalist, apothecary-inspired and deliberately unfussy. The familiar label-forward design allows it to take centre stage especially during this month, September, when full-size bottles are exclusively available.
