If you’re a Marvel fan, you know the ever-expanding cinematic universe has a long way to go before it runs out of material. That’s because there are thousands of comic book issues featuring every superhero from Iron Man to Captain America to the X-Men. DC is starting to build their own universe as well with the recent release of Batman V. Superman and the upcoming Suicide Squad. But the thought of reading all the comic books that continue to inspire the movies is more than a little daunting.
Luckily, there are plenty of non-super hero graphic novel series to read instead. So why not take a break from all the caped crusaders and give something different a chance? Here are a few graphic novel series to remind you that the medium is about a lot more than just super heroes.
Saga
Written by Brian K. Vaughan and illustrated by Fiona Staples, the Saga series has been described as “an epic space opera fantasy” that is like a “Star Wars meets Game of Thrones”. The story follows Alana and Marko, a couple who are from opposite sides of an alien war, and their inter-species daughter, Hazel. The series has been a huge critical and commercial success and has won Eisner, Harvey and Hugo Awards. It is currently Image Comics top selling title, even beating out fan favourite, The Walking Dead.
