Maybe you’ve heard of it by now, since your social media feeds are probably full of videos of everyone you know taking the Ice Bucket Challenge. But if somehow this is the first you’ve heard of it, the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge is sort of like an internet chain letter, but for a good cause. How it works is, you are nominated by someone you know to complete the challenge (which is dumping a bucket of ice water over your head), and you have 24 hours to do so, or donate $100 to the ALS Association. Then you challenge three more people to do the same.
ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, is a disease of the nerve cells in both the brain and the spinal cord that controls voluntary muscle movement. Over time, it weakens muscles and your ability to control them, leading to death. The ALS Association has seen a huge increase in donations compared to last year, thanks, in part, to the Ice Bucket Challenge and the awareness it is bringing to the disease. If you would like to donate, go to als.ca. In the meantime, here are 10 celebrities that accepted the Ice Bucket Challenge, and gave it their own unique spin.
