1913 To 2013: A Then And Now

A hundred years ago World War I hadn’t yet happened, but was about to. A hundred years ago “automobiles” were just hitting the market, most of them Ford Model T. A hundred years ago the present was a hazy future inside a cubist painting.

Here’s 5 “Then and Now’s,” 1913 and 2013, to look over the slow grind and twerk of the last hundred years.

2013: American scientists at Princeton and Johns Hopkins use a 3D printer to engineer a living human ear from collagen and animal ear cell cultures. The 3D map, modified for their use, is available on Thingiverse. The radio electronics of the ear make it fully functional, and the cartilage cells it is seeded with keep it independently alive and resilient. It is hoped similar ears can be applied in amputation cases.
