1913 To 2013: A Then And Now

A hundred years ago World War I hadn’t yet happened, but was about to. A hundred years ago “automobiles” were just hitting the market, most of them Ford Model T. A hundred years ago the present was a hazy future inside a cubist painting.

Here’s 5 “Then and Now’s,” 1913 and 2013, to look over the slow grind and twerk of the last hundred years.

1913: In the summer of 1913 R.J. Reynolds launches Camel cigarettes, so dubbed because these first pre-packaged cigarettes to be sold use Turkish paper. Until this time most people roll their own smokes, but with Camel Reynolds cuts the cost and necessity. In one of their early ad campaigns, the company parades an actual camel through the main streets of towns, passing out free cigarettes.
