Barbie’s Boyfriend Ken Gets A Diverse Makeover

Barbie's boyfriend Ken gets diverse makeover

Toy company Mattel announced Tuesday that the iconic Ken doll has received quite the diverse makeover. Barbie’s well-known companion will be offered in 15 different selections to choose from.

New Ken dolls will be offered in three different body types: slim, broad and original, seven different skin tones, eight hair colours and nine different hair styles. A series of clothing options will also be available with contemporary styles of casual and relaxed to stylish and modern, completing the entire makeover of the Barbie line.

The makeover is part of the new “Fashionistas” line introduced last year, which saw 25 new Barbie dolls offering a similarly personalized selection. Senior vice president and general manager of Barbie, Lisa McKnight spoke of the transformation, noting the decision to offer a variety of Ken dolls was to embrace the diversity of today’s generation.

“Evolving Ken was a natural evolution for the brand and allows girls to further personalize the role they want him to play in Barbie’s world,” said McKnight.

This is also the first major update of Ken dolls in 56 years.

Since its introduction to the toy world in 1961, Ken has seen minor changes; including the rock star Rappin’ Rockin’ Ken, the professional Dr. Ken, and the charming Sugar Daddy Ken. While these slight variations of the classic Barbie boyfriend have been occasional, this is the first time Ken will be offered in a diverse selection of ethnicities, hairstyles, and body types.

10 new dolls have been released to the public, with an expected five more to be released in the next few months. The new collection of Ken dolls will be available immediately online, and some retail stores, and widely released on July 8th.
