Dutifully Dissecting Dexter: “A Little Reflection” Review

Dexter and Deb: The Same, But Different

The best moment of this week’s episode were the two scenes where Dexter and Deb are trying to hang out again like they used to.

Back at Dexter’s, steaks and beers, just like the old days, except it’s all kinds of awkward, and not just because the steak is like leather. It played out like two close friends sitting down for the first time after a massive fight where they shared some pretty grizzly secrets, and it was excellent.

The second exchange, this time at Deb’s place, was similar. They’re trying to fall back into a rhythm, but they’re off beat. This is how it works in real life, and I’m glad they’re handling things that way on the show as well.

Hannah’s Back!

FINALLY!

Right at the end of Dexter and Debra’s awkward hangout at her place, Deb gets feeling drowsy, and slumps over on her side on the couch. As Dex attempts to help her, he too succumbs to drowsiness, and right before he passes out…

“Hello Dexter. Remember me?”

Hannah McKay is back folks, and that can only mean things are going to get more interesting from here on out.

Quick Hitters

Batista tabs Miller for the vacant sergeant position, and Quinn’s not happy, but he’s not that upset either. Jamie gets mad at her brother for picking someone else, which means this little dynamic is going to continue. Great…

Harrison lies about losing the television remote, which Jamie finds broken under his bed. When Dexter talks to him about it, telling him “we shouldn’t lie,” Harrison counters with “But you lie, Daddy,” and pulls out the bloodstained stuffed animal Dexter tried to clean in Episode 1. Not only is a good teachable moment for father and son, but it’s a potential hazard Dexter will have to deal with in the future.

My Two Cents

I still don’t trust Dr. Vogel, and my gut feeling after Sunday’s episode is that taking Zach Hamilton under his wing is going to come back to bite Dexter in the ass, and Vogel is going to have something to do with it.

Hannah’s return is awesome because she’s a firecracker that livens up what has been a fairly step-by-step season so far. What can I say – I like crazy chicks.

Until next week… it’s been a slice.
