Hollywood’s Biggest Box Office Bombs

Last week marked the release of the historical epic, Ben-Hur. The movie was expected to be a failure, and when it did open, it became yet another unnecessary reboot for the modern age. This time, director Timur Bekmambetov, sacrilegiously besmirched the 1959 classic of the same name and managed to taint Morgan Freeman’s career in the process. Despite its awfulness, the reboot faced tough competition in the box office, lining up against Suicide Squad, War Dogs, and the smash comedy, Sausage Party. Surrounded by negative reviews and lacklustre promotion, Ben-Hur opened in sixth place, amassing $11 million dollars. This total was rather disappointing for Paramount Pictures, who had allotted the film and its team over $100,000,000 in production financing.

Despite the failure of Ben-Hur, it is still hard-pressed to reach the levels of disappointment held by these select flicks. In dishonour of this terrible movie, we bring you the biggest box office bombs of all time.

1. The 13th Warrior (1999)

The Mask Of Zorro sustained Antonio Banderas as one of Hollywood’s most coveted actors. A short year later and Banderas would join what would become, the worst box office flop of all time. The 13th Warrior is loosely based on Michael Crichton’s excellent Eaters Of The Dead, and for what it’s worth, it has its moments. Still, the film was critically panned and has an inflated estimation, with upwards of $183,000,000 in losses.
