James Gandolfini has passed away at the age of 51, HBO has confirmed.

The Sopranos actor was reportedly in Italy for the 59th annual Taormina Film Festival in Sicily, where he was scheduled to participate in several events over the weekend.

Although most people became familiar with the Italian American actor after seeing him play mob boss Tony Soprano on HBO from 1999 to 2007, Gandolfini had a longstanding acting career including hit films, indie films and one groundbreaking series.
