A Marine who dropped back in a race and cheered on a nine-year-old boy finish has become an internet sensation.

Last weekend Lance Corporal Myles Kerr was competing in the annual Jeff Drenth Memorial 5K at the Venetian Festival in Charlevoix, Michigan with his army friends when he spotted nine-year-old Brandon Fuchs struggling to keep up.

The boy reportedly asked 19-year-old Kerr: “Sir, will you please run with me?”, after losing the group he was running with.

The race results show that the Marine finished five seconds behind the little boy at 34.53 minutes.

A photo of the pair running posted on the Seal of Honor Facebook page – set up in honor of Lieutenant Michael P. Murphy, a Navy SEAL and Medal of Honor recipient, who fought in Afghanistan – has gone viral and has been shared more than 62,000 times and boasts more than 255,000 “likes” and 12,600 comments.

Fuchs’ family reportedly gave Kerr a $100 gift card to Grey Gables Restaurant as a sign of their appreciation, and the Marine seems to be taking his 15 minutes in his stride, telling his Twitter followers, “I was just doing what any man would do, but thank you!”
