Netflix Canada And Only Netflix Canada Gets Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Listen – there are a ton of reasons why Canada is significantly better than the United States, including free health care, Tim Horton’s and poutine, but there is another reason to add to that list as of right now.

Roughly eight months after it hits theatres on December 18, Star Wars: The Force Awakens (a.k.a. Episode VII) will hit Netflix in Canada… and nowhere else. Canada only. That’s right, it’s us and no one else, suckers!

According to Variety, the reason Canadian Netflix and Canadian Netflix alone will get the highly anticipated flick before anyone else has to do with when Disney pay TV distribution deals. Basically, Starz still has the Disney rights in the United States through 2015, meaning that network will be the home of the latest saga involving rebels and jedis and Skywalkers and stormtroopers in the United States.

Fortunately for Canadian fans, Corus Entertainment’s deal expired, allowing Netflix to swoop in, secure the rights and bring everything that’s about to happen in a galaxy far, far way to Canadian Netflix roughly eight months after it hits theatres.

In case you’ve been living under a rock – or, you know, you’re not an obsessive Star Wars – the upcoming flick is set approximately 30 years after the events of Return of the Jedi, and will feature a combination of characters you’re familiar with – Han Solo, Chewbacca, Princess Leia et al – and a bunch of newcomers who will be played by the likes of Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega and Oscar Isaac.

It was written by Lawrence Kasdan (read: the dude that wrote the original trilogy) and J.J. Abrams, who was also the man behind the camera and based on the brief snippets we’ve seen so far, it looks like it should be amazing enough to make us forget about the prequel trilogy that damn-near made us want to be done with the entire Star Wars universe.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens opens in theatres on December 18th.
