The 10 best games of 2013... so far

While the fall gaming schedule is always jam-packed, the upcoming launch of the PS4 and Xbox One means many great current-gen games will probably be lost in the shuffle. Most of these games can be found at bargain prices, and are sure to rank among the year’s absolute best.

The Last of Us (PS3)

Focusing on the bond between a child and surrogate father figure, The Last of Us is anything but a traditional action game, and that’s part of the reason why it’s so great. Set decades after the collapse of civilization, Joel, a world-weary survivor, is tasked with escorting a young girl, Ellie, to a medical research facility. Ellie’s DNA holds the cure to a virus that’s turned most of the world’s population into infected zombies, and together the two of them must combat both man and ghoul alike to survive. Their journey, and the struggle within each of them to regain their humanity, forms the crux of one of gaming’s most memorable duos. Action packed and tense, The Last of Us creates a terrifying world, rich with characters, graphical detail and spot-on gameplay. It’s 2013’s best game to date, and arguably one of the finest, most emotionally gratifying video games of all time.
