On August 25th, 2001, R&B superstar Aaliyah, boarded a Cessna 402 plane at a Bahamian airport. The singer had just wrapped production on her latest video, “Rock The Boat”, off of her newly released and self-titled album. In what would be her final tragic moment, the plane unexpectedly plummeted from the air, crashing and killing its occupants. The intoxicated pilot lost control of his vehicle, and subsequently, became responsible for the death of Aaliyah and seven others. The event sent shockwaves throughout the music community. At only 22 years of age, Aaliyah had cemented herself as one of the industry’s brightest young acts. Her voice defined the R&B genre during the 1990s, and would prove to be an incredible influence for years to come.

“Are You That Somebody?” gave the ridiculous film, Dr. Doolittle, a Grammy nomination. That fact alone speaks to the strength of the piece. Years after its release, Timbaland revealed in an interview, that the track was recorded after a lengthy live performance. The whispery and smooth vocals on the cut, do well to support this claim.
