Smoke and liquor has always been linked to booze since early alcohol production process heavily relied on an open flame to ‘cook’ the liquor. Over the years, mixologists have tried to bring the smoky flavour of olden days back to their drinks. But it wasn’t until 2007 when a New York bartender, Eben Freeman, sparked a smokey revolution. Since then, smoked cocktails have been popping up on menus. And we think it is time you tried it at home.That’s right, smoking a drink has become quite the trend in many bars but did you know it is easy to make at home? So why not make a Smoked Old Fashioned?

What we love most about this Smoked Old Fashioned is the amazing aroma and flavours you capture from the hickory wood. You won’t believe how much the flavour profile is elevated by the simple, yet very impressive, trick. Its distinctive flavour is achieved simply by smoking the glass before mixing the cocktail. Here’s how…
Ingredients:

  • 2oz Buffalo Trace Bourbon
  • .5oz Spiced Maple Syrup (maple syrup, all spice, cinnamon, cloves, water)
  • 4 dashes Angostura bitters

Method:

  1. Torch 3-5 pieces of hickory wood chips; cover the smoking chips with a rocks glass
  2. Mix bourbon, spiced maple syrup and bitters
  3. Add ice to glass and stir
  4. Strain over fresh ice in the smoked glass
  5. Garnish: Orange twist
