David Bowie, the legendary singer-songwriter who broke pop and rock boundaries, has died following an 18-month battle with cancer. Representative Steve Martin said early Monday that the music icon died “peacefully” and was surrounded by family.

“While many of you will share in this loss, we ask that you respect the family’s privacy during their time of grief,” the statement read. No more details were provided.

Bowie’s 69th birthday was on January 8, the same day as he released a new album called “Blackstar,” a collaboration with a jazz quartet that was typically enigmatic and exploratory.

Bowie is survived by his wife Iman and two children. The model married the British singer in 1992 and they welcomed a daughter, Lexi, in 2000. Bowie has a son, Duncan, from his first marriage to Angie Bowie, and was also stepfather to Iman’s elder daughter, Zulekha.

Duncan Jones confirmed the death on Twitter with a picture with his father in the 1970s, saying “Very sorry and sad to say it’s true.”
