The Secondary Players
We’re going to move quickly here, so keep up:
Matthews is back in charge. LaGuerta’s death prompted Angel Batista to give up on being retired and “return to catching bad guys,” and he’s stuck with boxes of her stuff in his living room. His sister Jamie is still Harrison’s nanny, and as the Season 7 finale alluded to, she’s hooked up with Quinn, though no one knows.
Moving on…
The Twist
After his long night with Deb, the next morning finds Dexter sitting on the Captain Maria LaGuerta Memorial Bench (seriously) as Dr. Vogel approaches carrying a manila envelope.
Dexter barks that he’s not interested in talking, and after being rebuffed on her advance, Vogel leaves the envelope with Dexter and begins to walk away. Opening the package, Dexter removes a series of crayon drawings – one of a family with a little boy standing detached from his mother, father, and sister, followed by a series of graphic images of dead bodies and blood.
At the top right of one of the pages, the artist signed their name. It reads Dexter.
He chases down Vogel, presser he against the wall, demanding answers, anger and rage radiating in his face.
“You can’t kill me,” she says, staring down our titular antihero. “I don’t fit Harry’s code.”
Roll credits.
My Two Cents
Love the Dr. Vogel angle because it opens up so many avenues to explore this season. She clearly knows some things about Dexter, but how? Is she someone he can trust or will she end up as someone he wants to see on his table?
The fractured relationship between Dexter and Deb was a must, and will hopefully remain the chief story throughout the year. Deb has already told Dexter she hates him, that she killed the wrong person, and that she doesn’t want to have anything to do with him, so where this goes as the season progresses will be interesting.
My guess is that Dr. Vogel and Dexter work hand-in-hand pursuing this season’s killer, but I fully expect things to take another turn as we move towards the final episode. As for Deb, I think she’ll continue to wrestle with her Dexter issues, and there is bound to be something involving her new boss somewhere along the way as well, though it’s too early – and we haven’t seen enough of him – for me to speculate at this point.
That’s it for this week. Let us know what you think in the comments section, and be sure to come back next Monday for the next installment of Dutifully Dissecting Dexter.
It’s been a slice.
