Dutifully Dissecting Dexter: “Make Your Own Kind Of Music” Review

Detective Morgan?

Deb’s getting the itch to join the force again, and by the time the episode is over, he’s checked in on Oliver Saxon/Daniel Vogel as a suspect in Cassie’s murder with Quinn, and been given her badge back by Angel.

She’s also got a house guest, as Dexter has brought Hannah to stay at his sister’s while the Federal Marshalls are out looking for her. Admittedly, it is the last place anyone would look, and the bonus is that we got some witty banter about Debra eating a dinner prepared by a woman that has twice drugged her this week:

Hannah: “You hungry?”
Debra: “Are you kidding?”
Hannah: “Totally fair.”

Awesome. Best exchange of the season. Better than Vogel’s quip when Dexter needled Deb earlier in the year.

Anyway, late in the episode, Deb’s back at work at Elway’s, and he comes in to bust her (pardon my incorrect anatomy lessons) balls about what happened when she was in The Keys chasing down a lead about Hannah the week before.

He’s pissed that Deb didn’t tell him Hannah and Dexter dated, and is convinced that she either saw Hannah or let her skate at Dexter’s request (right on both counts, Elway!), and suggests that maybe Debra should find work elsewhere.

It’s nice to see SPF having a bit more to say than “Here’s another electrolyte beverage,” but now he’s just kind of showing up angry for five minutes each week. I get it, but I hope they give him something juicier over the final three episodes.

Quick Hitters

– Quinn kisses Deb after the two talk to Oliver Saxon/Daniel Vogel. Clearly, this is going to be a thing for the rest of the season, and we’re going to have some kind of drama involving Quinn, Deb, and Jamie, maybe even Angel too.

– Matthews informs Angel that Zach Hamilton’s family has filed a missing persons report, and instructs the sergeant to keep him up to date on the situation. Clearly, this is going to be one of the loose ends that could trip Dexter up over the final episodes.

My Two Cents

Everyone knew the early season demise of “The Brain Surgeon” was too good to be true, and now we’re finding out that those hunches we had about Dr. Vogel being a potential bad guy all along might be right too.

I think she’s been plotting all this with her son Daniel all along, feigning surprise whenever the removed pieces of brain turned up at her door. Even if she wasn’t, that happy family brunch at the end of Sunday’s episode has me convinced that she’s going to try to protect her son and turn him loose on Dexter as we push towards the finale.

Deb seems destined to return to the force (which will probably be how the rumoured spin-off comes together – lots of the same, familiar characters can remain intact), and you know she’s going to be in the thick of things down the stretch.

Obviously, Dexter’s plans to leave Miami with Hannah and Harrison aren’t going to go smoothly. He’s going to have to have his showdown with The Vogels, and this season has been building to a “Debra finding herself again,” which makes me think she’s going to end up putting at least one – if not more – of our killers away.

Will she lock up her own brother? Or will she be put in a situation where she has to make another “LaGuerta Decision” and choose differently?

We’ll find out over the final three weeks.

Until next Monday… it’s been a slice.
