If you’re a Marvel fan, you know the ever-expanding cinematic universe has a long way to go before it runs out of material. That’s because there are thousands of comic book issues featuring every superhero from Iron Man to Captain America to the X-Men. DC is starting to build their own universe as well with the recent release of Batman V. Superman and the upcoming Suicide Squad. But the thought of reading all the comic books that continue to inspire the movies is more than a little daunting.

Luckily, there are plenty of non-super hero graphic novel series to read instead. So why not take a break from all the caped crusaders and give something different a chance? Here are a few graphic novel series to remind you that the medium is about a lot more than just super heroes.

East of West

Also published by Image Comics, East of West is a science fiction Western set in a dystopian version of the U.S whose fate rests on the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse— Death, War, Famine and Conquest. Written by Jonathan Hickman and illustrated by Nick Dragotta, the series’ first issue was published in March 2013 and sold out within a week. There are currently 24 issues in print, and the story is ongoing.
