If you’re a Marvel fan, you know the ever-expanding cinematic universe has a long way to go before it runs out of material. That’s because there are thousands of comic book issues featuring every superhero from Iron Man to Captain America to the X-Men. DC is starting to build their own universe as well with the recent release of Batman V. Superman and the upcoming Suicide Squad. But the thought of reading all the comic books that continue to inspire the movies is more than a little daunting.

Luckily, there are plenty of non-super hero graphic novel series to read instead. So why not take a break from all the caped crusaders and give something different a chance? Here are a few graphic novel series to remind you that the medium is about a lot more than just super heroes.

The Sandman

Neil Gaiman’s most well-known series, The Sandman is a classic of the graphic novel medium. It’s original run, published by Vertigo, included 75 issues from 1989 until 1996, with Gaiman’s contract stipulating that the series would end when he left it. There are also a range of spin-offs, most not written by Gaiman, and the series and its spin-offs have won more than 26 Eisner Awards. A film adaptation has been in the works for years, but never seems to gather enough steam to live up to the source material.
