If you’ve yet to catch an episode of Rick and Morty, we strongly suggest you do so now. In fact, with such a massive and enthusiastic fan base, it’s entirely possible that your friends are already nagging you to bing-watch the whole thing. You don’t have to take our word for it either. Rick and Morty is a critical darling with bullet-proof scores on Metacritic, IMDB, and Rotten Tomatoes.

Currently in its third season, the Adult Swim cartoon has become one of the most beloved programs on television, and its impact on pop culture is becoming impossible to ignore. Thanks to a boundaryless world and an insanely talented writer’s room, the scrappy animated comedy has risen from sheer obscurity to global phenomena in just a few short years. But before the success, Rick and Morty was just a rough sketch on the desk of its creators, Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland.

The two writers were riding the highs of respective endeavours: NBC’s cult hit Community and the whacky stoner comedy Adventure Time. Sharing mutual admiration for each other, Roiland and Harmon knew that they wanted to join forces in some capacity. Brainstorming sessions led to the two building upon a borrowed premise from the iconic 1985 film, Back to the Future. After some tireless work and a whole lot of riffing, Harmon and Roiland turned in the pilot of what would become Rick and Morty. Of course, there was a whole lot of stuff in between those two moments.

Adult Swim recently released special behind-the-scenes videos that further explore the origins of everyone’s favourite grandfather and grandson combo. The mini documentary is split into two parts, and features interviews and concept art from the show’s archives. You can watch the program below via YouTube.
