The Worst Video Game Movies Of All Time

Above: Stars of the 1994 film, 'Double Dragon'

This week, we were gifted with the new trailer for, Assassin's Creed. The action movie is yet another video game adaption to hit the big screen. Thankfully, from the brief glimpses we've received, it doesn't appear to be a total train wreck. Upon analysis, there are a couple of big things going for the flick. Firstly, Assassin's brings with it some serious star power. All of Michael Fassbender, Marion Cotillard, and Jeremy Irons, elevate the film from mere adaption, to legitimate blockbuster. The cast is supported by another notable name, Justin Kurzel. The Australian director has maintained a successful run of films, including 2015's Shakespearian drama, Macbeth.

If you're a fan of the video game franchise, you're praying for a successful and true, film adaption. Within the past decade, we've seen traditionally "nerdy" comic book films, debut to critical acclaim. The same, however, cannot be said of video game movies. While Assassin's Creed is hoping to turn the tide, it's hard to forget the plethora of video game duds. While we hope for the best, it's fun to reflect on the worst. Here are some of the worst video game adaptations of all time.

Street Fighter: The Legend Of Chun-Li (2009)

Capcom’s iconic Street Fighter games, have been entertaining players for three decades. Sadly, for fans of the franchise, the movies have been anything but fun. The original 1994 bomb, is often cited as one of the worst video game adaptations of time. You can read all about why it failed, in this excellent think piece from Polygon. Forgotten amongst its predecessors, is 2009’s The Legend Of Chun-Li. This time, Smallville favourite, Kristin Kreuk, plays the titular role. Throughout its 96 minutes, the disastrous film gives us nothing of merit. GiantBomb’s, Ryan Davis, perfectly sums up the experience, by calling it a “re-envisioning by people who can’t see”. If you’re still not convinced, check out this supercut showcasing line delivery from co-star, Chris Klein.
