McGregor Coach Says Mayweather Fight Will Happen This Year

Despite an initial and rather cruel prank on April Fool’s Day, it appears as though the much-hyped McGregor vs Mayweather superfight may still be on for later this year. Conor McGregor’s coach, John Kavanagh, set social media on fire last week when he seemingly confirmed the bout which has been at the centre of speculation for many months now. Of course, Kavanagh soon retracted the statement and revealed it all to be a frustrating joke.

Needless to say, the prank left a bad taste in the mouths of MMA and boxing fans around the world, who have tirelessly debated and analyzed the potential match on forums and social media. Just when it seemed more and more improbable, the saga continued yesterday when the Irishman’s coach appeared on the Bill and Boz show on Fox Sports News 50. This time however, the information proved to be a little more promising.

Speaking with Bill and Boz, Kavanagh remained optimistic that the event will get the greenlight. “In my mind, it’s on. That’s the mentality we’re in,” he said. “Like you said, there’s a lot of fingers in the pie on this one. There’s different promotions, different organizations, different commissions that are involved, but as far as I’m concerned, I really believe it’s going to happen this year. That’s the mindset I have. Let the people in the suits worry about the paperwork. We’re training for it.”

Should the fight indeed take place, it’ll be a contender for fight of the year. McGregor is an MMA superstar at the height of his career, while Floyd Mayweather is still one of the biggest names in sport. While the two come from different worlds, Kavanagh doesn’t seem to be thrown off about the potential of duking it out in the boxing ring. “It’s simpler, less skills involved,” he stated.
