The 10 Best Sports Moments Of 2013

Above: The Baltimore Ravens triumph over the San Francisco 49ers in one of the most exciting Super Bowls in years

The Leafs acting like the Leafs

The Leafs haven’t made the playoffs in, ohhhh… about 200 years. Finally they do, and end the first round of the playoffs the only way Leafs know how to do – in gut-wrenching, heart-breaking fashion.

Arbitrary stat alert:  No team in NHL history has ever won Game 7 after trailing by three goals in the third period. Cue Maple Leafs…

With only 90 seconds left in the third, Boston is down by two goals. Then there’s a goal, and then another to take the game into OT. With a final Boston miracle:  Bergeron fires one past Reimer and ends it for the Bruins on home-ice. The Bruins advanced to the Stanley Cup finals, where they lost to the Chicago Blackhawks.

Blackhawks win Stanley Cup in 6

In Blackhawks fashion, the Boys from Chicago come back from a 2 game deficit to win the Stanley Cup in 6. With 1:16 left in the third period, and Boston winning 2-1, Toews and Bickell tie it up, letting Boston’s home-ice know they’re taking the game to OT. But they’re not done… with 59 seconds left (only 17 seconds later), Bolland tips one in, taking the game to 3-2 Hawks! Was this revenge from the Gods of Hockey for Boston’s 3rd period win against the Maple Leafs? Guess we’ll never know.

Peyton Manning, Mr. 51

In 2004, Peyton Manning, then with Indianapolis, set an NFL single-season touchdown passing record with 49, beating out Dan Marino. They said it couldn’t be done, and yet, three years later, Tom Brady added one more, throwing 50 in a season. On December 22nd, 2013, Peyton came roaring back, throwing #51 in a single season. Peyton has one game left this year. It’s anyone’s guess what he’ll leave the record at for 2013, and for all-time.

Auburn Tigers – The ending that sports movies are made of…

It’s a tied game at the Iron Bowl. With a mere second remaining. Alabama’s kicker Adam Griffith tries for a career-long 57-yard field goal, that comes up just short. Auburn’s Defensive Back, Chris Davis catches the ball, and heads back into the fray. Looking like a tackle is imminent, he catches a lucky block and keeps cartoon-legging it up the sideline. I’m sure you can guess the rest of the story. With easily the greatest finish in Iron Bowl history, the Tigers win!

Super Bowl XLVII

So much to say, so little room to say it in. The Brother’s Harbaugh standing across the field from each other, in the first brother vs. brother Super Bowl, ever. The epitome of an underdog,  Ravens winning every post-season game to become Superbowl Champions. Ray Lewis’s final season, final game, final Super Bowl triumph. And finally, the Ravens winning by an embarrassing 28-6 at the half, power goes out for 34 minutes, which is exactly the points the Ravens had at the end of the 4th quarter, despite 49’ers post-halftime surge to score a total of 31. Plus, who can forget Jacoby Jones’ 109 yard kick return TD, smashing the previous super Bowl record!
