Sunscreen has officially entered its “don’t leave home without it” era—and for good reason. But despite decades of advice from dermatologists, there’s still a lot of confusion about what sunscreen actually does, whether the ingredients are safe and how much protection we really need.
The science is clear: sunscreen remains one of the simplest tools we have to protect our skin from UV damage, premature aging and skin cancer. According to Stanford Medicine dermatologists, ultraviolet radiation can damage skin cells in two major ways. UVB rays are linked to direct DNA damage that can trigger mutations and skin cancer, while UVA rays penetrate deeper into the skin, contributing to inflammation, uneven tone, wrinkles and photo-aging. And while we know you know, it bears repeating: regular sunscreen use can significantly reduce skin cancer risk. One Australian randomized trial showed daily sunscreen use lowered melanoma incidence by 50 per cent, while a Norwegian study found sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher was associated with a 30 per cent lower melanoma risk.
That doesn’t mean SPF 100 gives you a free pass to spend all day baking in the sun. Sunscreen works best as part of a bigger sun-protection routine: think hats, sunglasses, shade and reapplication. The Canadian reality check is especially important here. A McGill University-led study examining data from more than 77,000 people found that 75 per cent of adult Canadians spend at least 30 minutes outdoors in the sun with nearly half spending two hours or more outside. And guess what? Many reported inconsistent sunscreen use, despite one in three Canadians also reporting getting sunburned in the previous year. So use a sunscreen, people. Daily.
