Fragrance Of The Month: Thierry Mugler, Les Exceptions Woodissime EDP

Designer Thierry Mugler is renowned for his OTT avant garde style. Throughout the ’80s, his women’s collections included exaggerated power suits, leather masks and robotic armour. The ’90s were an explosion of bold colours, motorcycle bustiers with handle bars extending from the breasts and flame-shaped cut-outs, while the ’00s featured superhero-inspired attire favoured by Beyoncé and Lady Gaga.

Often dismissed as sexist fantasies, fetish fashion and futuristic costumes, the brand has dominated aspirational couture since its inception in Paris in 1973. And while contained in equally creative and artistic bottles, his line of 120-plus women’s and men’s fragrances is the label’s ironic counterpart, as it is one of the most wearable in the industry.

Mugler’s latest unisex eau, Mugler Les Exceptions, Woodissime EDP falls into this ready-to-wear category.

Centred around spicy, gooey, sensual oud, the scent opens with an elixir comprised of fresh fruits and sweet apricot/peach-smelling osmanthus. Sharp vetiver, spicy patchouli and dry cedar and mixed in before being poured over top of warm sandalwood. The overall effect is rich and full, deep and dark and touched with a surprisingly, light and sparkling floral effect. And much like his incredible and incomparable contributions to the fashion world, the bottle’s design equally compliments the scent. Art Deco-inspired, well engineered and with perfect structure, the flacon is luxurious in its approachable, architectural elegance.

Thierry Mugler, Mugler Les Exceptions, Woodissime EDP is $195 for 80 ml, available at Hudson’s Bay stores across Canada.
