Fragrance Of The Month: BARRE Overcast EDP

Fragrance Of The Month: BARRE Overcast EDP

This month? We try out by BARRE Overcast Eau de Parfum…

BARRE isn’t your typical fragrance house, and that’s exactly the point. Created by visual artist Bree Hyland and based in Nova Scotia, the brand approaches scent the same way an artist approaches a canvas. Each fragrance is designed as an extension of mood, season and personal expression rather than trend or tradition. The indie label leans into small-batch production and creative freedom, resulting in scents that feel considered, intimate and slightly unexpected. Like their recent rerelease of cult-favourite Overcast.

A sultry, leathery, unisex perfume, Overcast smells like cool air before it rains, softened by woodsy, quiet, skin-warmed sweetness. The fragrance opens with airy, almost mineral notes that give it that damp, just-before-a-storm feeling. It reads as clean but not sharp, with earthy notes of leather and soil. As it develops, soft, yet heady blooms of jasmine and bright bergamot weave through, adding a sensual vibe that keeps the scent from drifting too far into lightness. Hints of musk follow, creating warmth and a slightly lived-in quality that sits close to the skin.

The overall effect is calm and introspective. It doesn’t project loudly or demand attention, but instead creates an intimate personal space around you. The perfume feels thoughtful, steady and quietly confident, the kind of scent that becomes part of your presence rather than something separate from it.

Its bottle reflects that same sensibility. Minimalist glass, clean lines and an understated label with unique art keep the focus on the fragrance itself, while the compact design feels tactile and intentional, like an object you want to keep close.

BARRE Overcast EDP, $12 for 2 ml, $64 for 10 ml and $145 for 30 ml, available online at www.barrestudio.ca.
