Walt Disney World: Epcot

EXPLORING WALT DISNEY WORLD’S EPCOT

Walt Disney World’s Epcot opened on October 1, 1982 and of all the major theme parks throughout the complex, Epcot, with its scientific and cultural themes, is the most geared to adults. But, be warned… It also requires some stamina for a ton of walking.

Once guests pass the park’s iconic geodesic sphere (which was designed with the help of science fiction writer Ray Bradbury), they can explore Epcot’s exciting attractions, wander through international pavilions and check out the award-winning fireworks extravaganza. [Editor’s recommendation: Make sure you pick up an Epcot World Showcase Passport for $10 at any of the shops or carts. The passport is not only a great souvenir, but also a way to help guide you through your time exploring the park]

Recommended attractions and experiences

Saying there is plenty to do at Disney’s Epcot is an understatement.  Guests can take a behind-the-scenes tour of the park’s horticulture or architecture; or simply check out any of the numerous technological or scientific themed attractions scattered across the theme park.

Ready to check out some of the rides? Soarin’ is arguably Epcot’s most popular ride and it offers guests a scenic hang-gliding flight over various areas of California; Mission SPACE turns you into an astronaut who is dodging meteors on a space flight to Mars; Test Track is a high-speed ride that allows guests to design their own concept vehicle and then take them out for a test drive; and Spaceship Earth (which can be found inside Epcot’s geodesic sphere) offers guests a time machine-themed experience… in the dark!

In the evening make sure you schedule in some time to take in IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth, Epcot’s spectacular nighttime show that takes place on the World Showcase Lagoon. Illuminations takes place every night at the park’s closing time (usually around 9:00pm) and features spectacular fireworks, lasers, fire, and water fountains timed to a magical musical score.

World Showcase

Need a break from Epcot’s exciting rides? Shop, stroll, and dine your way through Epcot’s World Showcase, a permanent world’s fair featuring 11 different pavilions dedicated to a specific country: Mexico, Norway, China, Germany, Italy, United States, Japan, Morocco, France, United Kingdom, and Canada. Each of the international pavilions offers live entertainment, shopping and restaurants representing the respective country’s culture and cuisine. [Editor’s recommendation: If you’re hungry try the warm and tasty Churros at La Cantina de San Angel in the Mexico pavilion or stop for the some of the finest fish and chips this side of the pond at the Yorkshire County Fish Shop in the United Kingdom pavilion]

Ready to eat

Of course, many of the quick-service locations throughout Epcot have tables and chairs for you to sit down and eat at, but when you’re looking for something a little more grown up or you just need a drink after all of that walking… don’t worry you have plenty of options. Coral Reef Restaurant in The Living Seas pavilion is the only dining room in the world next to a 5.7-million-gallon aquarium; Le Cellier Steakhouse is a steak-lover’s paradise; or you can find authentic French fare and an impressive French wine list on the menu at Bistro de Paris.

Annual events

Epcot is home to several annual festivals, and concert series throughout the year. One of the best times for an adult-getaway to Disney World is during the fall during Epcot’s infamous Food & Wine Festival. The annual festival of gastronomy greatness lets guests hop from one booth to the next so they can sample (reasonably priced) tapas-style food. Of course, you’ll want to wash it down with a glass of wine or a beer.
