EXPLORING WALT DISNEY WORLD’S ANIMAL KINGDOM
Wondering what to expect when you enter Disney World’s newest theme park? Animal Kingdom opened its doors in the southwestern corner of Walt Disney World in April 1998, and the incredible space can only be described as the ultimate mix between a zoo and a theme park.
That means get ready for exciting shows, live animal exhibits and thrilling rides!
Of course, the main attraction of Animal Kingdom is the animals that live throughout the sprawling park. The exotic (and numerous endangered) animals that call Animal Kingdom home spend their days in expansive habitats that are as close to their natural environments as possible, with subtle and camouflaged barriers put in place to keep curious guests safe.
Recommended attractions and experiences
The must-do experience when visiting Animal Kingdom is definitely Kilimanjaro Safaris Expedition. The rugged journey takes visitors on a safari in an open-sided vehicle to see some of Africa’s most exotic animals. You’ll be amazed! [Editor’s note: No two safaris are the same as giraffes, lions, antelope, rhinos, warthogs, zebras and other stunning species roam the land as they like]
Ready for a thrill ride? Magic Kingdom’s newest ride is Expedition Everest, a high-altitude, high-speed roller coaster that flies through the theme park’s mini-mountain. Other major rides and attractions that can be found throughout Disney’s Animal Kingdom include: It’s Tough to be a Bug, a 3-D movie based on the Pixar film A Bug’s Life; Kali River Rapids, a soaking raft ride; and Dinosaur, a time travel ride into the late Cretaceous.
Finally, while you’re wandering through Animal Kingdom make sure to stop by the park’s most visible icon… The Tree of Life. The 14-story, 50-foot-wide tree is truly the centerpiece of Disney’s Animal Kingdom Park.
Ready to eat
Like all of the Walt Disney World theme parks, Animal Kingdom is filled a variety of counter service spots and fantastic restaurants. Burgers, pizza and endless menu of snacks can be found every step of the way. Looking to sit down in a restaurant and take your time? Consider the uber popular Rainforest Café, the quirky Restaurantosaurus in Dinoland USA or Tusker House for flavours that were inspired by Africa.
When you’re ready for desert, make sure you stop by Yak & Yeti Restaurant for the delectable (and oh so popular) Fried Cream Cheese Wontons with Pineapple! It’s like a little bite of heaven.
