High School Crushes: Sarah Michelle Gellar

Sarah Michelle Gellar

There was a stretch during our formative years where every smokin’ hot girl we were completely bonkers about had three names: Tiffani-Amber Thiessen, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Melissa Joan Hart.

Right up there near the top of that list was Sarah Michelle Gellar.

Note: Yes, we had a crush on Sabrina the Teenaged Witch. She and JLH will make appearances here shortly.

Gellar first caught our attention as the female lead on Swans Crossing, a syndicated step up from the hokey days of Saved By The Bell that came and went so quickly, most people don’t remember it.

Though she was picking up a Daytime Emmy Award for her work on All My Children, we kind of lost touch with SMG during those years, since while she was doing her thing on what everyone’s Grandmother referred to as “Her Stories,” we were in school, wondering what ever happened to that brunette beauty who slipped into our lives, only to vanish when Swans Crossing got the axe.

1997 was like that year when the cute girl you had a crush a few years early moved back to town, as Buffy the Vampire Slayer landed on television and I Know What You Did Last Summer arrived in theatres, giving us a double-dose of Ms. Sarah Michelle Gellar.

For the next few years, we got a steady fix of our favourite vampire slayer. Buffy Summers and company stuck around for seven seasons, and in the interim, Gellar had some memorable (Cruel Intentions) and not-so-memorable (Simply Irresistable) appearances as a leading lady in Hollywood. A couple live-action Scooby-Doo movies followed, which validated our prepubescent interest in the purple-dressed Daphne.

She went “under the radar” for a while after that, returning to television last year in the short-lived Ringer, but could be making a full-time return to our lives this fall when she stars alongside Robin Williams (yes – that Robin Williams) in the David E. Kelley sitcom, The Crazy Ones.

Thankfully, Williams and SMG are positioned as father and daughter, because it would have been really weird wanting to fight Mork from Ork for getting too close to our long-time love interest.

Welcome back, Sarah Michelle Gellar. We still love you.
