Woman Crush Wednesday: Carrie Underwood

Above: Carrie Underwood

Name: Carrie Underwood

Birthdate: March 10, 1983

Birthplace: Muskogee, Oklahoma

Claim to fame: She came to fame as the winner of the fourth season of American Idol. She’s also managed to build her legacy as the most successful American Idol winner of all time and top-selling female country vocalist over the past 10 years.

Where we can hear her next: Underwood’s new album “Storyteller” releases on October 23.

Interesting fact: Underwood states that if she hadn’t won the American Idol competition, she would have gone into television news as an anchor or reporter, as she studied journalism and communications at college.

Best quote: “I’m a private person, and I don’t want people knowing what kind of underwear I like. It’s creepy!”

Why we love her: Carrie Underwood is our WCW this week. She’s what you would call the ‘good girl of country’. And in a music industry overflowing with ‘good girls’, that’s really quite the accomplishment. Underwood is the kind of girl that would have been voted prom queen and then handed the crown off to one of her nerdy friends who she thought more deserving. She’s a good ole’ country girl all the way through. We love her for every good bone in her body.

Underwood won the fourth season of American Idol in 2005 and then steamrolled her way through the country music business, earning Grammy-upon-Grammy until she eventually became touted the “female vocalist of her generation” by Rolling Stone. But I think what they meant was, “female vocalist of her generation if Taylor Swift didn’t exist”. Regardless, Underwood will undoubtedly go down as the most talented, most successful, and highest earning American Idol winner in history (which wouldn’t be saying much if Kelly Clarkson didn’t exist).

Present day, Underwood is still demolishing the country music business, with her latest album “Storyteller” due to release on October 23. But only now she has her own home team team rooting behind her — she’s married to Canadian-born Nashville Predators’ star Mike Fischer, who now have a newborn son, Isaiah.

It all speaks volumes about Underwood’s likeability and vocal talents, considering she could have easily become yet another reality talent show winner casualty, fading out of the spotlight just as quickly as she came into it. She not only stuck around, but she has absolutely dominated an entire genre of music over the past decade (again, if Taylor Swift didn’t exist).

You have to love Carrie Underwood for being arguably the most wholesome artist in the music business. You can catch her new album “Storyteller” on October 23.
