Balenciaga Dethrones Gucci to Become World’s Hottest Fashion Brand

Move over Gucci. According to new research compiled by Business of Fashion and search platform Lyst, Balenciaga is officially the world’s hottest luxury fashion brand. The iconic Spanish outfit had an incredibly strong showing this year, beating out the likes of Givenchy, Valentino, Saint Laurent, and the aforementioned Gucci. Thanks to a recent rebrand (including a fresh logo), continued alignment with cultural influencers, and the runaway success of its Speed Trainers and Triple S sneakers, the fashion house has skyrocketed to the top of Lyst and BoS’ global rankings.

Balenciaga wasn’t the only firm to surprise fans this quarter. After placing 31st in last year’s list, American house Off-White rose to an impressive third place. This is largely due to the company’s women’s line as well as creator Virgil Abloh’s hugely popular shoe collaboration with Nike (which was recently named “Sneaker of the Year” by Footwear News). There were also a number of eye-raising omissions, notably Kanye West’s Yeezy line. Last year’s runner up was left off of the board this time, but expect the multi-faceted artist to rebound in 2018.

Lyst’s annual ranking is pulled from consumer data all around the globe. In an accompanying editorial piece, Business of Fashion shared more details on just how the information is gathered. “[Lyst] tracks 4.5 million data points per hour from over 65 million annual consumers, five million products and 12,000 brands. The formula allowed fashion houses to be analysed via search data, engagement statistics, conversion rates and sales.”
