Atari Announces Mysterious New Video Game System

Above: The new system does not have a release date

Attention, gamers! After a lengthy absence away from the market, the good folks over at Atari are now hard at work on a brand new video game system. Aptly titled, the Ataribox, the mysterious new device will be the company’s first home console since the infamous Jaguar CD, which released back in 1995. It’s a long time coming for the brand who bowed out of the infamous console wars due to lacklustre sales.

If you’re a true child of the ‘90s, you should already be well aware that the Jaguar eventually lost out to superior systems, the Nintendo 64 and Sony PlayStation. This fateful defeat shifted Atari’s focus from hardware production to video game development, where it has remained until now.

Atari took the internet by storm on Monday when it announced the Ataribox system with a brief video teaser posted onto the device’s official website. Even more exciting is that we may be getting an Atari redux as soon as later this year. Details regarding the product are being kept a secret, but today’s video may have provided some genuine clues.

Thanks to some devoted fans, we can already start piecing together some of the box’s potential features. Upon inspection, the system is equipped with an HDMI port, four USB ports, and an SD card slot. The Ataribox also has an area for a network cable, which will allow for internet capabilities.

An email sent out to Atari subscribers revealed that the console will be able to run both older and newer content. “As you can guess,” the email begins, “those ports suggest modern internal specs. It also means that while we will be delivering classic gaming content, we will also be delivering current gaming content.”

At this point, we can only speculate as to what this all means. Will Atari once again compete with big name rivals? We’ll just have to wait and find out. In the meantime, you can check out the short trailer below.
