Family Dinner, Crime Scene Analysis, and Getaway Plans
Dexter, Hannah, and Zach all sit down for dinner with Dr. Vogel, but it turns into a “let’s look at the pictures from Cassie’s murder together” session as Dexter tries to figure out who killed her, since Zach didn’t do it.
Post-dinner and photo study, Dexter leaves Dr. Vogel to take Zach home, and checks Hannah into a hotel, where he’ll pick her up in the morning to help her flea the country. After running down the plan for her getaway, the former flames rekindle their carnal relationship.
Yep – that’s the classy way of saying they get naked and roll around on the bed. Unfortunately, the only toned bum we see is Dexter’s.
Post-coitus, Dexter returns home… and finds Zach Hamilton, dead in his desk chair, his skull sawed open, the empathy region of his brain scooped out, and a Cass Elliott song playing on his iPod.
Vogel receives another glass jar will brain matter in it.
Debra dusts off her old police uniform.
Dexter dumps Zach’s body in the ocean.
Elway calls the Federal Marshalls to give them a tip about Hannah.
And just as she’s about to board her plane for the Bahamas, Dexter asks her to stay.
My Two Cents
The more things change, the more things stay the same.
Look – you had to know Dexter wasn’t going to send Hannah away. If you thought he would, you haven’t been paying attention. The fact that she’s sticking around makes his life more complete (in his eyes), but more complicated as well, since keeping a fugitive out of sight isn’t in a bustling city isn’t easy… not that I know from experience.
We now know that Zach didn’t kill Cassie, but we also now know that The Brain Surgeon is still on the loose.
This twist – which was a solid twist by the way – feels like the beginning of the end. For a couple of weeks now, the series as felt a little flat, but now we’ve got everybody involved in inter-connected stories that will surely serve as the basis for the action over the final four episodes in this series’ history.
Hannah’s return and continued presence will surely be something that pulls on Dexter from here on out – he’s always talked about wanting to have a “normal” life, and felt he could possibly have that with Hannah last season, you know, prior to her trying to kill Deb, and Dexter subsequently turning her in.
Will he be able to find that this time around?
And what will happen with Deb? Things with Elway have always felt tense and forced, so leaving and returning to Homicide seems like a given, but how will it play out?
And what about The Brain Surgeon?
Like I said off the top – the questions we were left with last week have been resolved, but now there are a whole slew of new ones to be figured out going forward.
We’re at the top of the stretch for Dexter as a series, and the sprint to the finish should – hopefully – be great.
Until next time… it’s been a slice.
