If you’re a Marvel fan, you know the ever-expanding cinematic universe has a long way to go before it runs out of material. That’s because there are thousands of comic book issues featuring every superhero from Iron Man to Captain America to the X-Men. DC is starting to build their own universe as well with the recent release of Batman V. Superman and the upcoming Suicide Squad. But the thought of reading all the comic books that continue to inspire the movies is more than a little daunting.

Luckily, there are plenty of non-super hero graphic novel series to read instead. So why not take a break from all the caped crusaders and give something different a chance? Here are a few graphic novel series to remind you that the medium is about a lot more than just super heroes.

Fables

Published from 2002 until 2015, Vertigo’s Fables followed various characters from fairy tales and folklore who have been forced out of their Homelands by “The Adversary”. The characters, known as ‘The Fables” have traveled to our world and formed a community in New York City called Fabletown. The series has won 14 Eisner Awards and a live action film is currently in development.
